The Orchestra Sings - An Interactive Youth Concert
For grades 3-5
Melody is one of the universal elements of music. This highly interactive program gives students the opportunity to explore what makes a good melody from the inside out. Teachers are given a comprehensive curriculum covering basic recorder and choral techniques that students will use as they play along with the orchestra in a culminating concert. The curriculum also covers important general music concepts, using the concert repertoire as case studies. Repertoire includes “Ode to Joy,” “Simple Gifts,” Copland's “I Bought Me a Cat,” Dvorak’s New World Symphony, Stravinsky’s Firebird, and two original songs written just for this program. IMPORTANT NOTE: Participation in the Teacher Training on August 30th is MANDATORY in order to attend "The Orchestra Sings."

Teacher Training
On August 30, 2011, the DSO will host a teacher training workshop at the Meyerson Symphony Center from 4:30-7:30 pm. From 4:30-5:30, we will give you general information about what to expect at a DSO Youth Concert, how to use the Teacher's Guide (for the fall Youth Concert), how seats are chosen, where to find resources, and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Meyerson.  In-school enrichment programs such as Amazing Music and Symphony YES! will be discussed as well.  The session from 5:30-7:30 will be for those schools participating in "The Orchestra Sings" interactive concert in January/February and is mandatory (if the teacher did not attend the summer training).  The workshop is free, but an RSVP is required. Please call Malori Fuchs at 214.871.4006 or e-mail m.fuchs@dalsym.com, if you plan to attend.
