Teacher Resources:
The Dallas Symphony's Lynn Harrell Concerto Competition began in 2002 to identify and encourage the highest level of musical talent in the state of Texas. The competition provides string and piano students under the age of 18 with the opportunity to compete for scholarships and a performance with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
Competition finalists perform before a panel of distinguished judges who have included world-renown cellist Lynn Harrell, Music Director Jaap van Zweden, DSO Music Director Emeritus Andrew Litton, and acclaimed violinists Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Cho-Liang Lin. Scholarships totaling more than $7,000 are awarded each year, and all finalists receive a copy of the juror's comments.
Past winners have gone on to attend prestigious schools including the Curtis Institute of Music and Eastman School of Music, and all are pursuing solo careers. Violinist Shannon Lee, who at age 11 won the 2004 competition, was featured as soloist with the DSO on its 2005 Texas Tour, performing the Barber Concerto for Violin and Orchestra.
